What is Ever Active?
Being physically active has been proven to increase individuals' mental health and social life, as well as reducing the risk of many physical health issues. Ever Active is a programme that supports older & disabled adults who are seeking to improve their health and fitness and reduce feelings of loneliness and social isolation.
Please note that currently Ever Active is funded by Reading Borough Council and West Berkshire Council and therefore only available in these areas.
Facts and Figures
The UK population is ageing – around 18.2% of the UK population were aged 65 years or over at mid-2017, compared with 15.9% in 2007; this is projected to grow to 20.7% by 2027. From looking at past patterns, we project that more than a quarter of UK residents will be aged 65 years or over within the next 50 years (Report 2018) so not only is now a great time to develop habits for life amongst young people, we need to develop the infrastructure for Older People to keep active also.
We deliver and support programmes including walking groups, gardening, yoga, bowls and volunteering which have all been shown to improve the health and wellbeing of people at all ages with long-term conditions.
How We'll Do It
All Ever Active sessions are low to moderate intensity and everyone is encouraged to take sessions at their own pace. A typical session also features opportunities for attendees to socialise with new friends. Sessions are delivered in a friendly and supportive group environment, led by qualified individuals and structures to help improve physical activity levels, mental and social health.
GBA can also support established social groups to be more active by providing equipment & training.
My husband uses a wheelchair and it doesn't make any difference - he's just one of the gang and can participate on the same level as everyone else. John has taught him the basics and every week is a good laugh. It's a great opportunity to make new friends and be active in a sport that is accessible to everyone whatever their ability or disability. We try to make it every week but if we miss the odd one due to family commitments it doesn't matter.
